Robertshaw Infinite Oven Switch 5500-235M

The Robertshaw 5500-235M infinite oven switch delivers stepless heat control for electric resistance elements in commercial and residential cooking and warming equipment. It replaces a failed original switch and restores full adjustability across the heat range.

The switch works by time-proportioning rather than by varying voltage. A bimetallic strip inside the body is warmed by a small internal heater; as it deflects, it opens the load contacts, and as it cools it closes them again. Turning the control knob changes the mechanical preload on the bimetal, altering the proportion of each cycle during which the contacts stay closed. Low settings produce short on periods with long off intervals, while high settings approach continuous conduction. Because the element is switched fully on or fully off, the design avoids the heat dissipation problems of resistive dimming.

Applications include electric ranges and cooktops, griddles and grills, deep fryers, food warmers, steam tables, holding cabinets, hot plates, and light process heating equipment where an operator sets a specific heat level.

Common failure indicators are an element stuck at full output, no output at any setting, contacts that chatter or cycle erratically, visible arcing damage at the terminals, or a loose knob shaft that will not hold position.

Before ordering, verify voltage and current rating, shaft length and profile, mounting hole pattern, and terminal arrangement against the switch being replaced, since infinite switches are not universally interchangeable. Disconnect and lock out power before service and test operation through the full range after installation.
