The Robertshaw 720-474 is a dual gas valve with a 24 volt operator, rated to approximately 150,000 BTU per hour.

A dual valve contains two valve seats in series within a single body, each independently operated. This redundancy is a safety provision: should one seat fail to close, the second still interrupts the gas flow, and the appliance does not admit gas to the burner without a call.

The arrangement is required on many appliance types and is standard on most modern gas heating equipment. It is one reason a modern gas valve is a more substantial device than the simple valves used in older appliances.

The two seats also permit a staged opening in some designs, where the first opens to establish a reduced flow before the second admits the full rate. This softens ignition, which reduces the noise and the thermal shock associated with a burner lighting abruptly at full rate.
