BASO Safety Valve 3/4" H15DA-3C

The BASO H15DA-3C is a 3/4 inch magnetic gas safety valve, used in standing pilot gas appliances.

A magnetic safety valve, sometimes called a safety shutoff or pilot safety valve, is the device that prevents gas flowing to the main burner unless a pilot flame is proven. It is held open by an electromagnet energised by the millivolt output of a thermocouple heated by the pilot flame. If the pilot goes out, the thermocouple cools, its output collapses, the electromagnet releases, and a spring closes the valve.

The elegance of the arrangement is that it requires no external power at all. The pilot flame generates the energy that holds the safety valve open, and any loss of pilot closes the gas supply automatically.

This is why lighting a standing pilot requires the reset button to be held down: it holds the valve open mechanically while the thermocouple heats sufficiently to take over.

A safety valve that will not stay open after the reset button is released points to a weak thermocouple, a poor connection at the valve, a dirty pilot burner producing a flame not properly enveloping the thermocouple, or a failed magnet.

Applications include commercial cooking equipment, boilers, water heaters, and standing pilot gas appliances.
