The Robertshaw 700-504 is a millivolt gas valve, operating from the output of a pilot generator rather than from an external electrical supply.

Millivolt systems are self powered. A pilot generator, essentially a multi-element thermopile heated by the standing pilot flame, produces several hundred millivolts, and that output operates the gas valve directly through a millivolt thermostat. The appliance requires no electrical connection whatsoever.

This is the arrangement's defining advantage and the reason it persists. A millivolt heater continues to operate during a power failure, which makes it valuable in cabins, garages, unheated outbuildings, and as backup heat. It also simplifies installation where no electrical supply is available.

The corresponding characteristics are that the system produces very little power, and everything in the circuit must be suited to it. Thermostat contacts must be rated for millivolt service, since ordinary contacts oxidise and will not conduct at such low voltage. Wire runs must be short and connections clean, because the circuit cannot tolerate voltage drop.

Diagnosing a millivolt system means measuring the pilot generator output under load, not just open circuit, since a generator can produce good open circuit voltage and collapse when the valve draws on it.

Applications include millivolt wall heaters, unit heaters, fireplaces, and standing pilot appliances.
