The Robertshaw 700-506 is a millivolt gas valve rated to approximately 300,000 BTU per hour.

At 300,000 BTU this is a substantial millivolt valve, suited to larger unit heaters and commercial appliances operating on a self powered standing pilot system.

The larger the appliance, the more the limitations of a millivolt circuit come into play. The pilot generator produces a fixed and modest output, and the valve operator must open against gas pressure using that limited power. Larger valves require correspondingly more power to operate, which leaves less margin for losses elsewhere in the circuit.

The practical consequence is that millivolt systems on larger appliances are less tolerant of the things that cause voltage drop: a weakening pilot generator, a partially blocked pilot orifice producing a smaller flame, corroded connections, or thermostat contacts that have oxidised.

A system that operates in mild weather but fails when the thermostat has been off for a period, or that works when first lit and drops out later, is generally showing marginal millivolt output rather than a valve fault.

Measuring generator output both open circuit and under load is the diagnostic that separates these.
