BASO Safety Valve 3/8 H43AA-12C

The BASO H43AA-12C is a 3/8 inch magnetic gas safety valve for standing pilot gas appliances.

Diagnosing a safety valve that will not hold follows a defined sequence, and the order matters because replacing the valve is the most expensive step.

Begin with the pilot flame itself. It should be steady, blue, and of sufficient size that it envelops the upper portion of the thermocouple tip. A small, yellow, or lifting flame will not heat the thermocouple adequately regardless of the condition of anything else, and the cause is usually a blocked pilot orifice or an incorrect gas pressure.

Next measure the thermocouple output. A serviceable thermocouple in a proper flame produces roughly 25 to 30 millivolts open circuit; substantially less indicates a failed thermocouple.

Then check the connection at the valve. The thermocouple lead carries millivolts, so a corroded or loose connection at the magnet drops enough voltage to release the valve. Clean it and tighten it snugly by hand plus a small turn, no more.

Only when the pilot, the thermocouple, and the connection are confirmed sound is the valve magnet the remaining suspect.
