The Mueller G012YE101024 is a 24 inch coated flexible gas connector for appliance connection.

The yellow coating on a gas connector is a corrosion barrier, and it addresses a specific and well documented failure mechanism.

Uncoated brass connectors installed in earlier decades suffered from dezincification, a corrosion process in which zinc is leached from the brass alloy, leaving a porous and mechanically weak structure. Connectors failing this way could leak or separate, and the resulting incidents led to product recalls and to the coated designs now standard.

Contemporary connectors use materials and coatings that resist this, but the coating also protects against the ordinary corrosive exposures found behind appliances: cleaning chemicals, moisture from spills and mopping, and in kitchens the combination of humidity and airborne grease.

The coating should be inspected when a connector is fitted and whenever an appliance is pulled out. Damage to the coating exposes the metal beneath, and a connector with a cut or abraded coating should be replaced rather than repaired.

Any older uncoated brass connector encountered during service should be replaced as a matter of course, regardless of apparent condition.
