The Moldex MOX6430 is an Alphas reusable earplug, one size, flanged, uncorded, gray and green, polyurethane, 27 dB noise reduction rating, PVC free, ANSI S3.19-1974, 50 pair per box.

Reusable flanged plugs are a different proposition from disposable foam and the trade is worth understanding.

Foam plugs seal by expanding to fill the canal, and they seal very well — which is why they carry the highest ratings. They also have to be rolled down and inserted correctly, and a foam plug inserted badly is a foam plug doing very little.

A flanged plug is a moulded shape that pushes in and seals against the canal wall. It cannot be rolled wrong. It goes in the same way every time, it can be inserted with dirty hands without contaminating the part that goes in the ear, and it can be washed and used again. For workers moving in and out of noise all day, that repeatability is worth more than a couple of decibels.

The 27 dB rating is honest for the type, and it comes with a caveat that belongs on every hearing protector: laboratory ratings overstate real-world performance substantially. Regulators generally expect the NRR to be derated for actual use. A plug worn badly protects far less than its number.

PVC free matters where PVC is restricted.
