The Mainstream Engineering QT2501 Qwikshot is an acid neutraliser for treating refrigeration systems after contamination.

Acid formation is the mechanism by which a contaminated system destroys a replacement compressor.

When a motor burns out, the high temperature breaks down refrigerant and lubricant, producing acids. Moisture entering a system reacts with refrigerant and POE lubricant through hydrolysis to produce further acid. Those acids circulate and attack motor winding insulation, metal surfaces, and elastomeric components.

A new compressor installed into an acidic system is subjected to the same attack, and a repeat failure some months later is the usual outcome.

The standard cleanup relies on filter driers, which adsorb acid and moisture along with particulate. A burnout rated liquid line drier, and a suction line drier where contamination is significant, are fitted, and the system is monitored afterward with oil acid testing, with driers changed again if acid persists.

Acid neutralising additives are intended to supplement this by chemically neutralising acid within the system.

Their use is a matter of judgement rather than routine. Compatibility with the refrigerant, lubricant, and equipment must be confirmed, some manufacturers advise against additives, and the underlying cleanup still has to be done properly.

Establish and correct the cause of the original failure, follow proper cleanup procedure, and confirm compatibility before introducing any additive.
