The Honeywell Howard Leight SPAMAX-1 is a Max earplug, single use, individual polybag, NRR 33, uncorded, one size, 200 per box.

NRR 33 is the ceiling. No earplug is rated higher, and this is one of the very few that reaches it — which makes it worth explaining what the number actually buys.

Thirty-three decibels is a laboratory figure, measured on trained subjects fitted by a technician under controlled conditions. OSHA's method for real-world A-weighted exposure is to subtract 7 and halve the result, which turns 33 into about 13 dB of assumed protection. That is the number a hearing conservation programme is built on.

So the gap between 33 and 13 is enormous, and it is not the plug's fault. It is fit. A foam plug has to be rolled down thin, inserted deep, and held while it expands, and a plug that expands in the outer ear rather than the canal delivers a fraction of its rating while feeling perfectly seated.

Which means training closes more of the gap than any rating ever will. The difference between a well-fitted 30 dB plug and a badly fitted 33 dB plug is not close.
