The Honeywell Howard Leight SPALL-1 is a Laser Lite earplug, single use, individual polybag, NRR 32, uncorded, small, 200 per box.

At NRR 32 this is near the ceiling for a foam earplug, and it is worth being precise about what the number means, because the label overstates the reality by design.

The NRR is a laboratory figure. It is measured on trained subjects, fitted by a technician, under controlled conditions — which is not a plant floor at six in the morning with a worker rolling a plug between dirty fingers while walking. Real-world attenuation is dramatically lower.

OSHA's method is arithmetic: for A-weighted noise, subtract 7 from the NRR and halve the result. Thirty-two becomes about 12.5 dB of assumed protection. That is still meaningful and it is a long way from 32.

The point is not that the plug is poor. It is that a hearing conservation programme built on the box number is protecting people less than it thinks, and the gap is closed by fit and training rather than by a higher rating.

The Laser Lite is a contoured T-shape in high-visibility colours — the shape helps seating, and the colour makes compliance visible across a floor.

Small is a size worth stocking. Canals differ, and a plug that does not fit does not seal.
