Honeywell Howard Leight SPALL-1-D Howard Leight Earplugs by Sperian Uncorded

The Honeywell Howard Leight SPALL-1-D is a Laser Lite earplug, uncorded, LS-500 dispenser refill, NRR 32, 500 pair per box and 4 boxes per case, 2,000 pair per case.

The dispenser refill designation is a compatibility specification and it is worth flagging plainly: this fits the LS-500 dispenser and nothing else.

Earplug dispensers are proprietary. A refill for one manufacturer's unit does not fit another's, and frequently does not fit a different model from the same manufacturer. That means the dispenser decision commits a facility to a refill supply, which is worth knowing before mounting one on a wall — and it means an order for refills has to name the dispenser.

That said, the dispenser is what makes hearing protection work at all, and the reason is friction.

Noise-induced hearing loss is cumulative, permanent, and completely painless. Nothing tells a worker it is happening. Protection depends entirely on plugs being worn every time — and that depends on getting a pair taking no effort. A box in a supervisor's office produces a workforce that goes without, because nobody walks back across a plant for a two-cent plug.

A dispenser at the entrance means grabbing a pair on the way in.

At 2,000 pair this is a facility supplying a busy entrance.

NRR 32 is a laboratory figure. OSHA's derating puts real-world protection near 12.5 dB.
