DiversiTech Compressor Tote ACT-6

The DiversiTech ACT-6 is a compressor tote, a carrying aid used to lift and transport hermetic compressors during installation and removal.

Compressors are awkward to handle. A residential compressor weighs sixty to ninety pounds, a light commercial unit considerably more, and the mass is concentrated in a smooth cylindrical body with no natural handholds. The suction and discharge stubs are the obvious things to grip and the worst choice, since they are thin copper brazed into the shell and are damaged by the load.

The practical problem is compounded by where compressors have to be carried. Rooftop plant reached by ladder, mechanical rooms at the end of narrow corridors, and residential side yards with restricted access are all common, and none allows the use of lifting equipment.

A tote provides secure handholds and distributes the load, allowing a two person lift where a bare compressor would be carried badly by one.

The injury risk here is real and well documented. Manual handling of heavy awkward loads is among the more common sources of lost time injury in the trades, and back injuries in particular tend to recur.

Confirm the tote suits the size and weight range of the compressors being handled. Inspect straps and stitching before each use, and plan the route and the lift before picking the compressor up.
