Description
The Copeland CR42K6E-TFD-925 is a three phase hermetic reciprocating compressor for air conditioning applications, operating on a nominal 460 volt supply with polyol ester lubricant.
The electrical components protecting a compressor must be matched to it, and a compressor replacement is the appropriate point to verify them. Two figures from the compressor nameplate govern the selection. Rated load amperage describes the current drawn in normal operation and determines conductor sizing, overload setting, and contactor rating. Locked rotor amperage describes the current drawn at the instant of starting, before the rotor turns, and it is several times the running figure.
A contactor selected without regard to locked rotor amperage will have its contacts eroded by the arc drawn at each start, and pitted contacts increase resistance, generate heat, and eventually weld or fail open. Burned contactor contacts are among the more frequent causes of compressor starting complaints.
Overload protection sized above the compressor's requirement allows sustained overcurrent that cooks the winding slowly. Sized below it, the compressor nuisance trips.
Where the replacement compressor differs in rating from the original, even slightly, the protection must be reviewed rather than assumed adequate.
Confirm capacity, voltage, phase, refrigerant, lubricant, connection sizes, mounting, and bill of material against the equipment, and verify contactor, overload, and conductor ratings before commissioning.
