The Copeland CR28K6E-PFV-925 is a single phase hermetic reciprocating compressor for air conditioning applications, charged with polyol ester lubricant.

A single phase compressor cannot start on its own. The winding arrangement produces no starting torque without assistance, so an external component is required to establish the phase shift that gets the rotor turning. Depending on the design this is a run capacitor alone, a start capacitor with a potential relay, or a PTC thermistor.

These components are not optional accessories and they are not interchangeable. A compressor fitted with the wrong capacitance value either fails to start reliably or runs with the winding currents unbalanced, and a potential relay of the wrong pickup voltage will drop the start capacitor out at the wrong point in the starting cycle.

The most common installation error on a compressor replacement is retaining the original starting components without verifying them. A run capacitor that has drifted below its rated capacitance will start the new compressor initially, then contribute to a repeat failure some months later. Capacitors are inexpensive and should be tested or replaced as a matter of course whenever a compressor is changed.

The PFV motor code indicates single phase operation on a nominal 208 to 230 volt supply.
