Copeland Compressor A/C Reciprocating CR34K6E-PFV-925

The Copeland CR34K6E-PFV-925 is a hermetic reciprocating air conditioning compressor supplied with a polyol ester oil charge, configured for single phase operation.

Polyol ester lubricant is required with HFC refrigerants because the mineral oils used with R-22 are not miscible with them and will not return to the compressor. POE performs that function well, but it introduces a handling requirement that mineral oil did not.

POE is hygroscopic. It absorbs moisture from the atmosphere readily and rapidly, and it holds that moisture rather than allowing it to separate. A compressor left open to atmosphere during installation begins absorbing moisture immediately, and the exposure that would have been harmless with a mineral oil compressor is not harmless here.

Moisture in a POE system produces acids through hydrolysis, and those acids attack motor winding insulation and metal surfaces. The resulting failure may be months away, and it is usually attributed to the compressor rather than to the installation practice.

The practical requirements follow directly. Keep the compressor sealed until the moment of installation, complete the brazing without delay, evacuate deeply and verify with an isolated vacuum decay test, and fit a new filter drier sized for the system.

The PFV code indicates single phase nominal 208 to 230 volt operation. Confirm capacity, voltage, refrigerant, connection sizes, and BOM against the application.
