The Copeland CR53KQE-PFV-970 is a single phase hermetic reciprocating air conditioning compressor with polyol ester lubricant, operating on a nominal 208 to 230 volt supply.

At this capacity the compressor sits toward the upper end of what is practical on a single phase supply, and starting current becomes a design consideration in its own right. Locked rotor amperage rises with compressor size, and a large single phase compressor draws a substantial surge at the moment of starting.

That surge interacts with the quality of the electrical supply. Where the service is adequate and conductors are correctly sized, the compressor starts cleanly. Where the supply is marginal, the voltage drops during the surge, and reduced voltage means reduced starting torque at precisely the moment maximum torque is needed. The compressor then takes longer to come up to speed, drawing locked rotor current for longer and heating the winding.

The observable symptoms are lights dimming when the unit cycles, a momentary hum before the compressor starts, or intermittent overload tripping on start attempts.

Starting assistance in the form of a hard start kit addresses the symptom, and is appropriate where the compressor genuinely needs it. It does not correct undersized conductors, poor connections, or inadequate supply capacity, which are worth investigating where the symptoms are present.
