Description
The Copeland ZPS104KCE-TF5-800 is a welded hermetic scroll compressor for air conditioning applications, configured for three phase operation on a nominal 200 to 230 volt supply.
Scroll compressors compress refrigerant between two spiral elements, one fixed and one orbiting. Vapour is drawn in at the outer edge, carried inward through progressively smaller pockets, and discharged at the centre. The design has no suction or discharge valves, fewer moving parts than a reciprocating compressor, and a continuous compression process that produces less pulsation and lower sound.
One characteristic separates scrolls sharply from reciprocating compressors and must be understood before commissioning a three phase unit. Scrolls are rotation sensitive. The spirals only compress when the orbiting scroll turns in the designed direction. Connected with reversed phase rotation, the compressor runs backwards, produces no meaningful pressure differential, becomes noticeably loud, and will be damaged if left running.
The check is straightforward. On starting, suction pressure should fall and discharge pressure should rise. If neither moves and the compressor is unusually loud, shut down immediately and swap any two of the three line conductors.
A technician accustomed to reciprocating compressors, which pump in either direction, may not expect this.
