The Yellow Jacket 77930 is an oil pump with siphon, used for transferring refrigeration oil into compressors and systems.

Adding oil to a refrigeration system requires the oil to be introduced without admitting air and moisture, and that requirement governs the method.

Polyol ester lubricants are hygroscopic and absorb moisture from the atmosphere rapidly. Oil poured from an open container has already begun absorbing moisture before it enters the system, and the moisture it carries in will form acids with the refrigerant.

A pump and siphon arrangement transfers oil from a sealed container directly into the system without exposing it to atmosphere, which is why the method is standard rather than optional on POE systems.

Container discipline follows from the same reasoning. Oil containers should be kept closed, opened only when oil is being drawn, and a partially used container that has been open on a bench is not suitable for a system that will be expected to last.

Quantity matters as much as method. Compressors are supplied with a specified oil charge, and adding oil without knowing how much is already present risks overcharging, which reduces capacity and can cause liquid slugging.

Where oil has been lost, establishing why is more useful than replacing it, since poor oil return usually indicates a piping or velocity problem.

Confirm the pump suits the oil type and container, and keep the pump clean and dedicated to one lubricant type.
