Uniweld Weld Tip TYPE17-3

The Uniweld TYPE17-3 is a size 3 welding tip for oxy acetylene torch equipment.

Moving up a tip size increases gas consumption noticeably, and that has consequences beyond running cost.

The acetylene withdrawal rate limit is the practical constraint. Acetylene is dissolved in acetone within the cylinder, and drawing gas faster than the permitted rate pulls acetone out with it. The limit is proportional to cylinder size, so a larger tip requires a larger cylinder.

Exceeding it damages equipment, produces a poor and unstable flame, and permanently reduces the cylinder's capacity as acetone is lost.

The symptoms are a flame that will not adjust properly and a cylinder that seems to empty faster than expected.

Where larger tips are needed regularly, the answer is a larger cylinder or manifolded cylinders rather than accepting the loss.

Oxygen consumption rises correspondingly, and an oxygen cylinder sized for smaller tips will empty quickly.

Planning the gas supply against the tip sizes the work requires, rather than the reverse, avoids both problems.

Working pressures must be set to the manufacturer's specification for the tip size, since pressures suited to a smaller tip will not support a larger one.

Confirm the tip series matches the torch handle, that the cylinder size supports the withdrawal rate the tip demands, set the specified working pressures, and keep the orifice clean with proper tip cleaners.
