Product Highlights
Description
The Harris 1601113 HA-11I is a heating tip for air fuel torch equipment.
Tip sizing is the specification that most affects brazing results, and undersizing is the more common error.
The physics is straightforward. Copper conducts heat extremely well, which is why it is used for refrigerant lines and why it is difficult to braze. Heat applied at the joint travels away along the tube in both directions. For the joint to reach brazing temperature, heat must be delivered faster than it is conducted away.
On a small tube this is easily achieved. As tube diameter and wall thickness increase, the rate of heat loss rises, and a point is reached where a given tip simply cannot keep up. The technician then applies the flame for longer and longer, heating a large area of the tube while the joint itself never reaches temperature.
The result is either no joint at all or a partially made one, along with an oxidised and overheated section of tube.
Ambient conditions shift this. Working outdoors in cold weather, or on a tube that is part of a large assembly acting as a heat sink, increases the demand.
Recognising that a tip is inadequate, rather than persisting, is the practical judgement.
Confirm the tip size suits the tube sizes involved and the fuel gas in use, and keep the orifice clean using proper tip cleaners.
