Description

The Harris 1601771 is a 5090-1 welding tip for oxy fuel torch equipment.

Welding tips produce a concentrated flame with a defined inner cone, intended for fusion welding where a small area of base metal is melted.

The flame is adjusted to one of three conditions depending on the work. A neutral flame, with balanced oxygen and fuel, is used for most steel welding. A carburising flame with excess fuel is used for certain applications. An oxidising flame with excess oxygen is used for a limited range of materials.

Reading the flame is a learned skill, based on the appearance of the inner cone and the feather around it.

Working pressures are specified for each tip size, and running outside them causes problems. Too low and the flame lacks velocity to stay at the tip, causing backfire and risking flashback. Too high and the flame blows off the tip.

Tip size relates to material thickness, with manufacturers publishing selection tables.

In HVAC work, welding tips see less use than heating tips, since the trade's requirement is predominantly brazing rather than fusion welding. Where fabrication or steel repair is involved they become relevant.

Confirm the tip suits the torch handle and the gases in use, set working pressures to the manufacturer's specification for the tip, keep the orifice clean with proper tip cleaners, and shut down and investigate any backfire.
