Uniweld Weld Tip TYPE17-2

The Uniweld TYPE17-2 is a size 2 welding tip for oxy acetylene torch equipment.

Welding tip numbering indicates orifice size, with larger numbers corresponding to larger orifices, greater gas flow, and more heat.

Selection is made against material thickness, and manufacturers publish tables giving the recommended tip size and the working pressures for each. A size 2 tip suits a particular range of material thickness, and using it outside that range gives poor results in both directions.

Too small a tip cannot deliver enough heat, and the weld pool will not establish. Too large a tip melts through thin material.

Working pressures are specific to the tip and must be set from the manufacturer's data rather than by habit. Running at incorrect pressure is a common cause of backfire, and repeated backfiring indicates something is wrong that should be investigated rather than tolerated.

Type 17 is a tip series designation, and tips are not interchangeable between series or between torch handles from different manufacturers. Confirming the tip suits the handle in use avoids a connection that appears to fit but is not designed to.

Oxy acetylene welding sees limited use in HVAC work compared with brazing, but arises in fabrication and steel repair.

Confirm the tip series matches the handle, set the working pressures specified for the tip, keep the orifice clean using tip cleaners, and observe hot work precautions.
