Product Highlights
Description
The Harris 1601112 HA-8I is a heating tip for air fuel torch handles.
Heating tips differ from welding tips in the flame they produce. A heating tip delivers a broader, softer flame that spreads heat over an area, which is what brazing requires. A welding tip produces a concentrated, sharp flame for melting a small area.
Brazing depends on bringing the whole joint to temperature evenly. A concentrated flame heats one spot, which causes the filler to flow toward that point rather than around the joint, and it risks overheating the copper locally while the rest of the joint remains too cold.
Tip size is selected against the tube size and wall thickness. A tip too small cannot deliver heat faster than the copper conducts it away, and the joint never reaches temperature no matter how long the flame is applied. A tip too large overheats the joint and the surrounding material, burning out the phosphorus in copper phosphorus filler and damaging nearby components.
Manufacturers publish tip selection guidance against tube size, and working from it rather than by habit produces better joints.
Tip condition matters. A tip with a damaged or partially blocked orifice produces an irregular flame, and tips should be cleaned with proper tip cleaners rather than drill bits or wire.
Confirm the tip suits the handle, the fuel gas, and the tube sizes involved.
