Uniweld Capn Hook Tip MTF-5

The Uniweld MTF-5 is a Cap'n Hook torch tip with a hooked configuration for brazing in restricted access positions.

Access is a genuine constraint on brazing quality, and it is underappreciated as a cause of poor joints.

A brazed joint requires the flame to be applied around the circumference so the whole joint reaches temperature evenly. Where the joint sits close to a wall, behind other pipework, or inside a cabinet, the technician can heat only the accessible side. The far side stays cooler, the filler does not flow around, and the joint is filled on one side only.

Such joints frequently hold a pressure test and fail later.

A hooked tip directs the flame back toward the operator, allowing the far side of a joint to be heated from an accessible position. On a line set against a wall, or a connection in a congested cabinet, it can be the difference between a sound joint and a compromised one.

The alternative where access cannot be improved is to reposition the pipework so the joint can be made properly, which is more work but produces a joint that lasts.

Heat shielding is often needed alongside a hooked tip, since directing a flame back toward the operator also directs it toward whatever is behind the joint.

Confirm the tip suits the handle and fuel gas, and maintain a fire watch after hot work.
