The Uniweld BG1 Sludge Sucker is a blow gun designed for condensate drain line service.

Clearing a drain line by suction rather than pressure has advantages in certain situations and is worth having as an alternative approach.

Pressure applied at the equipment end drives the obstruction toward the termination, which works well when the termination is accessible and discharges somewhere harmless. It works badly when the line runs to an inaccessible point, when the discharge is over a finished surface, or when the blockage is close to the termination and the pressure has a long column of water to move.

Suction applied at the termination draws the obstruction outward, which contains the debris at the point of access rather than distributing it.

The other advantage is that suction cannot force water backward into the drain pan or blow apart a glued joint, both of which are risks with pressure.

Whichever method is used, the underlying condition should be addressed afterward. Clearing restores flow; treatment, adequate slope, and a properly formed trap prevent the next blockage.

The trap in particular is worth checking, since a trap that is inadequate for the pressure at its connection point produces a pan that overflows with an entirely clear line.

Confirm the tool's fittings suit the drain sizes encountered, wear eye protection, and verify free drainage after clearing by pouring water into the pan.
