The Southwire 59540702 is solid 14/4 thermostat cable, providing four 14 gauge solid conductors in a jacketed assembly for HVAC control wiring.

Fourteen gauge is unusually heavy for thermostat cable, which is more commonly 18 gauge. The larger conductor is specified where voltage drop across a long control run would otherwise be problematic. This is a real consideration in commercial buildings and large residences: a 24 volt control circuit loses voltage across the resistance of the run, and if the voltage arriving at a contactor coil or gas valve solenoid falls too low, the device may chatter, fail to pull in reliably, or drop out under load. Heavier conductor reduces that drop and allows longer runs.

Four conductors support common control configurations requiring power, common, and two control functions, such as cooling and fan, or a two-stage heating call.

Solid conductor is standard for permanently installed control wiring where the cable is pulled once and not subsequently flexed. It terminates readily under screw terminals and holds position in terminal blocks without ferrules.

Applications include thermostat and control interconnects, zone control wiring, damper and actuator circuits, equipment interlocks, and low voltage control distribution in residential and commercial HVAC systems.
