Simple Green SGN13005 Cleaner and Degreaser Original Formula Biodegradable

The Simple Green SGN13005 is Original Formula cleaner and degreaser, biodegradable, 1 gal bottle, water base, VOC content 4.72 g/L, pH 8.5 to 9.2, butyl free, phosphate free, non-flammable, no Prop 65 listing.

The pH is the most useful number here and almost nobody reads it. At 8.5 to 9.2 this is mildly alkaline — roughly the pH of baking soda in water — which is what makes it safe on the enormous range of surfaces it is used on. Aggressive degreasers run pH 12 and above, and they work by attacking the soil chemically. They also attack paint, skin, and soft metals.

Butyl free is the other specification and it deserves credit. Butyl — 2-butoxyethanol — is the workhorse solvent in most degreasers, and it is effective and it is absorbed through skin. Formulating without it is a genuine difference rather than a marketing line.

The caution worth stating: Simple Green's own guidance is that the Original formula should not be left in prolonged contact with aluminium and some soft metals, and they produce a separate aircraft and precision formula for exactly that reason. Anyone cleaning aluminium — aircraft, ladders, trailers, machined parts — needs the correct product. Verify against Simple Green's guidance.
