The 4 mil thickness is the specification and it is the number that decides whether the glove is right for the job.

Disposable nitrile runs roughly from 3 mil to 8 mil, and the scale is a straight trade. Thin gloves give tactile feedback — a wearer can feel a small component, a fastener, a texture — and they tear. Thick gloves survive mechanical work and the wearer feels almost nothing.

Four mil is the light-duty end: food handling, medical, inspection, light assembly. It is the wrong glove for an engine bay, where it will be shredded in ten minutes and the wearer will conclude that nitrile gloves are useless. That is a specification error, not a product failure.
