The S-Line SLI20-EE2-9802X8 is a 2 inch x 8 ft eye-to-eye sling, shrink-wrapped, bulk, 2 ply, 2 inch wide, 9,800 lb webbing. Rated choker 5,000 lbs, vertical 6,400 lbs, basket 12,800 lbs.

Synthetic slings degrade from things that leave no mark, and that is what makes them different from chain.

Ultraviolet light is the first. Polyester and nylon webbing lose strength from sun exposure, and a sling that lives outdoors on a rack loses capacity continuously without changing appearance beyond some fading. A sling that has spent two years in the weather is not the sling on the tag.

Chemicals are the second, and the two common web materials have opposite vulnerabilities: nylon is attacked by acids and resists alkalis; polyester is attacked by alkalis and resists acids. A sling used in the wrong environment is being consumed. Verify the webbing material against the exposure — this data does not state it.

Heat is the third. Synthetic webbing has a temperature ceiling well below anything that glows, and a sling that has touched hot material may be compromised with only a slight glazing to show for it.

None of these produce a visible break. That is why service life, storage, and environment matter as much as inspection.
