The basket rating of 12,800 lbs carries a condition that this tag does not state and that kills people: it assumes the legs hang vertically.

The moment a basket's legs are angled inward toward a single hook — which is what happens the instant a load is wider than the hook is high above it — the tension in each leg exceeds the share of the weight it is carrying. The legs are pulling against each other as well as up. At sixty degrees from horizontal the tension is about fifteen percent higher than the vertical share. At forty-five degrees it is around forty percent higher. At thirty degrees it doubles.

That is geometry, not a safety margin. A shallow sling angle can overload a sling carrying a load well under its rating, and the rigger has no sense of it, because nothing feels different.

The rule that follows: keep sling angles above forty-five degrees wherever possible, and never go below thirty. Use a longer sling or a spreader bar rather than a shallower angle.

At 12 ft this sling buys angle on a wide load. That is what the length is for.
