Robertshaw Commercial Defrost Timer 8145-20

The Robertshaw 8145-20 is a commercial defrost timer for 208/240 volt circuits, controlling refrigeration defrost cycles.

Electromechanical defrost timers remain widely used despite the availability of electronic controls, and there are practical reasons for their persistence.

They are simple, and their state is visible. The dial position shows where the cycle stands, the pins or cams show what has been set, and advancing the mechanism by hand tests the whole defrost circuit in seconds. An electronic control offers none of this directly, and diagnosing one generally means working through a menu or a diagnostic code.

They are also robust in the electrical sense, being largely indifferent to the voltage transients and supply irregularities that damage electronic controls.

Against that, they are mechanical devices with a motor, gear train, cams, and contacts, all of which wear, and their settings are coarser than an electronic control permits.

Voltage rating must match the supply circuit, as timer motors are voltage specific.
