Robertshaw Commercial Defrost 8045-20

The Robertshaw 8045-20 is a commercial defrost timer for 208/240 volt circuits, controlling defrost cycles on refrigeration equipment.

The distinction between this and the 120 volt version in the same series is the timer motor's supply voltage, and it must match the circuit it is connected to. This is the specification most often gotten wrong when ordering a defrost timer, because the timers are outwardly similar and the suffix carrying the voltage is easily overlooked in a part number.

A timer motor supplied at the wrong voltage fails in one of two ways. Supplied above its rating it burns out, generally quickly. Supplied below its rating it either does not run or runs erratically, and the symptom, a system that never defrosts or defrosts at unpredictable intervals, is easily mistaken for a mechanical fault in the timer.

Confirming the supply voltage with a meter before ordering, rather than assuming from the equipment type, avoids the problem. Commercial refrigeration installations commonly contain both voltages.

Defrost timers are electromechanical devices with a motor, a cam assembly, and switch contacts, all of which wear. A timer that has been in service for many years is a reasonable suspect when defrost behaviour becomes erratic.
