Robertshaw Commercial Defrost 8145-00

The Robertshaw 8145-00 is a commercial defrost timer operating at 120 volts, used in refrigeration defrost control.

A defrost timer sits in a circuit with several other components, and a fault in any of them presents as a defrost problem. Knowing what else is involved shortens the diagnosis.

The defrost heaters or hot gas valve provide the heat. The defrost termination thermostat, mounted on the coil, senses when the coil has cleared. A drain line heater, where fitted, keeps the condensate drain clear so that melted frost can escape rather than refreezing. The evaporator fan delay keeps the fans off until the coil has returned to temperature, preventing warm wet air being blown into the space at the end of defrost.

That last component causes a recognisable fault when it fails: a system that defrosts correctly but immediately re-frosts, because the fans restart while the coil is still warm and wet.

A blocked or frozen drain produces another distinctive symptom, ice accumulating in the bottom of the fixture rather than on the coil.

Considering the whole defrost system rather than the timer alone is what resolves persistent icing problems.
