The Robertshaw 8045-00 is a commercial defrost timer operating at 120 volts, controlling defrost cycles on refrigeration equipment.

Defrost is necessary on any refrigeration system whose evaporator operates below freezing. Moisture in the air condenses on the coil and freezes, and the accumulating frost progressively insulates the surface and blocks airflow between the fins. Left unaddressed, the coil becomes a block of ice, airflow stops, capacity collapses, and the compressor is at risk from liquid refrigerant returning through an evaporator that is no longer boiling it off.

A defrost timer interrupts refrigeration at intervals and permits the coil to clear, either by allowing air to melt the frost or by energising a defrost heater or hot gas circuit.

The timer's settings determine whether the system works properly. Too few or too short defrost cycles leave frost accumulating from one cycle to the next; too many waste energy and raise product temperature unnecessarily. Setting them correctly requires knowledge of the application, the humidity, and how often the fixture is opened.

The 120 volt rating identifies the supply the timer motor requires, and it must match the circuit.
