The Robertshaw 8141-00 is a commercial defrost timer operating at 120 volts, for refrigeration defrost control.

Diagnosing a defrost fault benefits from a systematic approach, because the symptoms of several quite different faults are identical: a coil that ices up and a fixture that will not hold temperature.

The possibilities are that defrost is not being initiated, that it is being initiated but the heat source is not working, that it is terminating too early, or that the system is not returning to refrigeration afterwards.

Advancing the timer manually into defrost is the quickest way to separate these. If the system enters defrost and the heaters energise, initiation was the problem. If the heaters do not energise, the fault is in the defrost circuit rather than the timer. If defrost runs but the coil does not clear, the heaters or their contactor are at fault, or the termination is ending the cycle prematurely.

Observing a full cycle, though it takes time, answers most defrost questions definitively.
