Robertshaw Cold Control A30-2209

The Robertshaw A30-2209 is a cold control for commercial refrigeration temperature regulation.

Defrost in medium temperature refrigeration is frequently accomplished through the temperature control rather than by a separate timer, using an arrangement called off-cycle defrost.

The principle is that a cooler operating above freezing has an evaporator running below freezing during operation but above freezing when off. If the off cycle is long enough, frost on the coil melts naturally without any heat source.

Achieving this requires the control's cut-in and cut-out to be set so that the compressor is off for sufficient time and the coil warms above freezing. A differential set too narrow gives short off cycles and the coil never clears, so frost accumulates and the cooler progressively loses capacity.

This is one of the practical reasons why setting a narrow differential to hold tight temperature control can be counterproductive: the tighter control produces frost accumulation which eventually degrades control entirely.

A cooler with a persistently frosted coil and a narrow differential setting is showing this pattern.

Applications include medium temperature commercial refrigeration, coolers, and food service refrigeration equipment.
