The Johnson Controls A19ABA-40C is a remote bulb temperature control with a single pole single throw switch action.

A remote bulb control senses temperature at a location away from the control body. A sealed bulb, connected to the control by a capillary tube, contains a fluid whose pressure varies with temperature, and that pressure operates the switch mechanism.

The arrangement's value is that the sensing point and the control can be in entirely different places. A refrigeration control can sense temperature inside a cabinet while its body and wiring remain outside. A control for a heated space can sense at the point that matters while mounting where it is accessible.

Bulb placement determines the control's behaviour and is worth deliberate thought. It should sense the temperature that actually matters, away from direct airflow from the evaporator or heat source, away from the influence of a nearby wall or product mass, and where it is protected from mechanical damage.

The capillary must be routed with care. It is vulnerable to kinking and to fatigue where it flexes repeatedly, and a damaged capillary releases the charge and disables the control.

Applications include commercial refrigeration, coolers, freezers, and temperature control in process and building applications.
