The Johnson Controls A19ABC-24C is a remote bulb temperature control for refrigeration and process applications.

Setting a temperature control involves two figures, and confusing them is a common source of poor performance.

The cut-out is the temperature at which the control stops the equipment. The cut-in, or differential, is the temperature change required before it restarts.

On a refrigeration control, a narrow differential holds the space closer to setpoint but cycles the equipment frequently. Frequent cycling is hard on compressors, particularly on starting, and produces more wear than continuous running.

A wider differential allows the space temperature to swing more but gives longer, less frequent run cycles.

The correct setting depends on what is being cooled. Product with substantial thermal mass buffers the air temperature swing, so a wider differential is acceptable and preferable. Air temperature in an empty cabinet swings quickly, so a wide differential produces noticeable variation.

Setting a differential too narrow in an attempt to hold tight temperature control is a common cause of compressor short cycling.

Applications include commercial refrigeration, coolers, freezers, and process temperature control.
