Taped seams are the specification that separates a waterproof jacket from a jacket made of waterproof fabric, and the distinction is not marketing.

Every seam is a line of needle holes. A garment sewn from perfectly waterproof material leaks through every one of them, and it leaks first at the shoulders and the hood — which is where rain lands. Taping seals the holes from inside with a bonded strip. Without it, "waterproof outer shell" describes the fabric and not the garment.

The 2-in-1 construction is the other half. A removable fleece liner makes this two garments: shell alone in mild wet weather, shell and liner in cold. That matters because a single insulated waterproof jacket is wrong most of the year — too warm in autumn, and a worker who is too warm takes it off.

Class 3 is the highest ANSI/ISEA 107 high-visibility class and it requires sleeves. That is deliberate: a driver recognises a human form by its moving limbs, not by a bright patch.

The black bottom hides the dirt that a hi-vis garment collects at exactly the height it collects it.
