The Permatex PER81630 is a 3.35 oz red silicone gasket maker.
Red is a grade designation in RTV silicone rather than a colour preference, and it conventionally indicates the high-temperature formulation — which is why it lives on exhaust manifolds, turbo housings, and hot flanges where a standard RTV would degrade. Verify the specific temperature rating against Permatex's data before selling it against a requirement.
What RTV silicone does that a rigid sealant cannot is move. It cures at ambient conditions by reacting with atmospheric moisture, and the cured gasket stays flexible and elastic across its life. That flexibility is what accommodates the expansion, contraction, and vibration a real flange experiences — a rigid sealant in the same joint cracks and leaks.
One caution belongs on any RTV used in a modern engine bay. Some silicone formulations release acetic acid while curing — the vinegar smell is the giveaway — and that acid attacks certain metals and can damage oxygen sensors in a closed system. Sensor-safe formulations exist precisely for this, and Permatex's Ultra series is theirs.
So the choice between a red high-temperature RTV and a sensor-safe one is not a ladder. It is the application.
