MCR Safety MCR983XL Mechanics Gloves Synthetic Black/Orange X-Large Thinsulate

The MCR Safety MCR983XL is a pair of mechanics gloves, synthetic, X-Large, black and orange, slip-on open cuff, Thinsulate lining, embossed finish, black polymer, nylon cuff.

At X-Large the sizing point that governs all insulated gloves becomes worth stating plainly, because it runs opposite to intuition.

Insulation works by trapping air. A glove that fits snugly compresses the lining against the hand and squeezes that air out — and a compressed insulated glove is a cold glove. Worse, a tight glove restricts blood flow, and restricted circulation in cold conditions is the actual mechanism by which fingers get cold and stay cold. The hand's own blood supply is doing more warming than any lining.

So an insulated glove should fit slightly loose. Someone who wears a large in an unlined mechanic's glove may well want an X-Large here, and ordering by their usual number produces a glove that underperforms for reasons they will never diagnose.

Thinsulate's contribution is warmth per unit of thickness: microfibres trap more air in less bulk than conventional insulation, which is what lets a warm glove remain a working glove.

The embossed finish grips by texture rather than a thick polymer coating.

The slip-on nylon cuff means fast on, fast off — which decides whether a cold-weather glove is worn or pocketed.

Applications include cold-weather mechanical work and outdoor maintenance.
