The MCR Safety MCR980M is a pair of mechanics gloves, synthetic, medium, black and orange, slip-on open cuff, Thinsulate lining, embossed finish, black polymer, nylon cuff.

Thinsulate is the lining and it is worth explaining because the name describes the achievement. Conventional insulation traps air, and trapping more air means more loft — more thickness. That is a problem in a glove, where thickness is the enemy of the entire purpose.

Thinsulate uses microfibres, which are far finer than conventional insulating fibres, so they trap more air per unit of thickness. The result is warmth in a thinner package. In a garment that is fine; in a glove it is the difference between working and fumbling.

The embossed finish is the grip mechanism. Embossing gives a textured palm surface without adding a thick polymer coating, which keeps the glove flexible and the hand able to feel the work.

The nylon cuff and slip-on design get the glove on and off fast, which matters in cold work — the glove that stays in a pocket because it is a struggle to put on is protecting nothing.

Note the sizing point that applies to all insulated gloves: a tight fit compresses the lining and destroys the insulation, and restricts circulation. Insulated gloves want a slightly looser fit.
