The Mars M90340 is a switching relay with a 24 volt coil, used for control switching in HVAC equipment.

A relay differs from a contactor in scale and purpose. Where a contactor switches power loads such as compressors and large motors, a relay switches control circuits and smaller loads, and it typically offers contact arrangements a contactor does not, including normally closed contacts that open when the coil is energised.

That normally closed capability is what makes relays useful in control logic. A relay can interlock two functions so that one cannot operate while the other does, invert a signal, isolate one control circuit from another, or provide additional contacts where a control board has run out.

Common applications in HVAC include fan control, where a relay energises the indoor blower on a call for cooling independently of the compressor circuit, interlocking a damper or an accessory with equipment operation, isolating a low voltage signal from a different voltage circuit, and adding switched outputs to an existing control scheme.
