DiversiTech Definite Purpose Contactor C220A

The DiversiTech C220A is a two pole definite purpose contactor rated 20 amps with a 24 volt coil.

The 24 volt coil is the standard arrangement in residential and light commercial HVAC. A control transformer in the equipment steps line voltage down to 24 volts, the thermostat switches that low voltage circuit, and the contactor coil translates it into the switching of full line voltage to the compressor and fan.

Twenty four volt control exists for good reasons: it is safe to handle, it permits small conductors to be run long distances to a thermostat, and it allows the control circuit to be interrupted by safety devices without those devices switching line current.

The practical consequence for the contactor is that its coil is at the end of a control circuit that may include a thermostat, a run of thermostat cable, several safety switches in series, and a defrost or control board. Voltage drop accumulates across all of that, and a coil receiving materially less than its rated voltage may pull in weakly, chatter, or fail to pull in at all.

Measuring coil voltage at the contactor itself, rather than at the transformer, is the check that identifies this.

At 20 amps the contactor suits smaller compressors and motor loads. Applications include residential and light commercial air conditioning and refrigeration.
