DiversiTech Contactor 40A 2P 24V C240A

The DiversiTech C240A is a two pole definite purpose contactor rated 40 amps with a 24 volt coil.

Definite purpose contactors differ from general purpose or NEMA rated contactors in an important respect: they contain no overload protection. A contactor switches the load and nothing more. If the motor it feeds draws excessive current from a locked rotor, a failed bearing, a lost phase, or a mechanical obstruction, the contactor will happily continue supplying that current until something else intervenes.

That something else is the branch circuit protection and, where fitted, the equipment's internal overload devices. Compressors generally contain internal thermal protection, and motors may have internal or external overloads. Understanding that the contactor is not part of that protection scheme matters when diagnosing a repeatedly failing component.

A motor starter, by contrast, combines a contactor with an overload relay sized to the motor, and is the correct device where the equipment does not provide its own protection.

At 40 amps with a 24 volt coil this is a common size for larger residential and light commercial condensing units.

Applications include residential and light commercial air conditioning, heat pump, and refrigeration equipment. Select the rating against the equipment nameplate full load and locked rotor amps.
