DiversiTech Definite Purpose Contactor C130C

The DiversiTech C130C is a single pole definite purpose contactor rated 30 amps with a 208/240 volt coil.

A contactor is an electrically operated switch. Energising its coil pulls an armature that closes the power contacts, connecting the load; de-energising the coil releases the armature and a spring opens the contacts. This allows a low current control circuit to switch a high current load, which is how a thermostat drawing milliamps starts a compressor drawing tens of amps.

The single pole configuration switches one leg of the supply only. This is important to understand and is a genuine safety matter: with a single pole contactor open, the load is off but one leg remains energised right up to the compressor or motor terminals. Anyone who assumes a de-energised contactor means a de-energised load is working on live equipment.

For that reason, servicing must always begin at the disconnect, with voltage verified absent at the equipment rather than inferred from the contactor's position.

The 208/240 volt coil is energised from line voltage rather than from a control transformer, an arrangement found on equipment without a 24 volt control circuit.

Applications include residential and light commercial air conditioning, heat pump, and refrigeration equipment.
