DiversiTech Definite Purpose Contactor C220B

The DiversiTech C220B is a two pole definite purpose contactor rated 20 amps with a 120 volt coil.

A 120 volt coil is used where the control circuit operates at line voltage rather than through a 24 volt transformer. This arrangement appears in commercial refrigeration, on equipment controlled by line voltage thermostats or pressure controls, and in packaged equipment where a separate control transformer was not provided.

The distinction matters when replacing a contactor, because coil voltage is the specification most often gotten wrong. A 24 volt coil connected to 120 volts will burn out immediately, frequently within seconds, and the failure is unmistakable. The opposite error, a 120 volt coil on a 24 volt circuit, is quieter: the coil simply does not develop enough force to pull the armature in, and the contactor either does nothing or buzzes without closing. Technicians occasionally chase a supposed control fault for some time before checking the coil rating stamped on the contactor.

Verifying the coil voltage marking against the circuit before wiring takes moments and avoids both.

At 20 amps the contactor suits smaller compressors, fan motors, and similar loads.
