The DiversiTech C230A is a two pole definite purpose contactor rated 30 amps with a 24 volt coil.

This is among the most commonly replaced components in residential air conditioning, and understanding why explains a good deal about how these systems fail.

The contactor makes and breaks the full compressor and condenser fan load every time the thermostat calls, which in a hot climate can be many thousands of operations per season. Each break draws an arc across the separating contacts, and each arc removes a small amount of material. Over years, the contact faces become pitted and the effective contact area falls.

Reduced contact area means higher resistance, and higher resistance under load means heat. That heat accelerates the deterioration, and the process runs away toward one of two outcomes: contacts that no longer make reliable connection, producing a compressor that hums and trips on overload, or contacts that weld closed, leaving the compressor running continuously regardless of the thermostat.

Discoloured, pitted contacts found during service are a warning worth acting on. Filing them is not a repair; it removes the silver alloy facing and shortens what life remains.

At 30 amps with a 24 volt coil this is a standard residential size. Applications include residential and light commercial air conditioning and heat pump equipment.
