The Mars M92340 is a double pole double throw switching relay with a 24 volt coil.

Double pole double throw describes the contact arrangement: two independent circuits are switched, and each has both a normally open and a normally closed contact. Energising the coil transfers each circuit from its normally closed contact to its normally open contact.

This is the most versatile contact arrangement available in a general purpose relay, and it is why DPDT relays are stocked where a specific control function has to be built. A single relay can simultaneously energise one circuit and de-energise another, which is exactly what an interlock requires. It can switch a signal between two destinations. It can provide isolated contacts for a building management system while operating equipment locally.

In HVAC work these appear in changeover applications, fan interlocks, accessory control, isolating dissimilar control voltages, and adapting equipment to control schemes it was not originally designed for.

Relay contact ratings are modest compared with contactors, and exceeding them by using a relay to switch a motor load directly is a common error that results in welded contacts.

The 24 volt coil is energised from the equipment control transformer.

Applications include residential and commercial HVAC and refrigeration control circuits.
